The SMART series paint thickness gauges allow connection to a phone via Bluetooth. Thanks to the free GL-SMART app, you gain access to a range of additional features not available on standard paint thickness gauges.

The GL-SMART app allows you to connect to a SMART series paint thickness gauge. Depending on the gauge model, you gain access to a range of new features not available on standard gauges. The app currently runs on Android version 6 or higher and iOS version 14.1 or higher. App updates provided by the manufacturer are free of charge. The advantage of the app is that it will be continuously refined and expanded. The GL-SMART app can be downloaded free of charge.

App features when connected to the GL-PRO-SMART-FAZ gauge:

* Basic and advanced measurement with measurement logging;
* Professional measurement with measurement of individual bodywork components;
* Generation of reports containing measurements and additional information such as make, registration number, VIN, comments, etc.;
* Export of reports to PDF;
* Adding photos of the vehicle being inspected;

Note. Upon launch or when selecting a specific function, the app may request permission to access your location, camera and media. Permission to access your location is essential for Bluetooth 4 to function; this is a technical requirement of the Android system. We do not collect any information regarding your phone’s location.

Basic measurement
After selecting this function, a list of detected meters will be displayed – select one of them. The app will enter measurement mode in ‘basic view’. Switching to “extended view” will reveal additional functions: a table listing the measurements, a graph of the measurements, and the option to save measurements in the measurement directory. To take a measurement, you must also go to the measurement function in the meter’s MENU. Once the meter is placed against the bodywork, the measurement will be displayed on the meter’s LCD screen and in the GL-SMART app.

Professional measurement
Allows measurement broken down into individual bodywork components. A graphic showing a projection of the car broken down into individual sections will be displayed. After selecting a specific section, the view shown in the photo on the left will be displayed. The measurement is performed in the same way as described in the “basic measurement” function.

In professional mode, it is also possible to save the measurement. With the GL-SMART-8 version of the meter, you can take up to 10 photos of the vehicle being measured. To do this, click on the camera icon in the top right-hand corner of the app. The photos will be saved in a folder along with the measurement for that car. Photos are saved separately for each car tested.

The measurement folder
contains saved measurements, divided into professional (icons with a dark blue border) and basic (icons with a green border). By selecting a specific measurement file, you can edit data such as make, engine, model, mileage, details of the person carrying out the measurements, conclusions, etc. Additionally, a file containing a professional measurement has a function to export data to a PDF file.

Calibration
Selecting this function allows you to calibrate the meter. Please follow the on-screen prompts.

ELECTRONICS
The GL-PRO series meters are solutions based on modern 32-bit processors, enabling fast and accurate measurement using a 12-bit converter.

PROBE
The meters feature an innovative probe design that enables spot measurement on steel, galvanised steel and aluminium sheets, automatically recognising the material being tested and displaying the material type on the screen. The probe is spring-mounted and ends with a so-called ball.

METAL
RECOGNITION A distinctive feature of the GL-PRO-SMART-FAZ meter is its ability to automatically recognise whether a steel sheet is coated with a layer of zinc or is ungalvanised. This is particularly important when measuring a car – it reveals which body panels have been replaced with cheaper, ungalvanised ones.

MEASUREMENT ASSISTANT®
FUNCTION It advises the vehicle assessor whether the car has undergone bodywork and paint repairs.

HOLD
FUNCTION This feature is found in the most expensive meters. It allows you to take a measurement and hold it, so you can move the meter away from the surface being tested and read the measurement. The HOLD function can be disabled via the MENU, allowing you to take measurements continuously.

AUDIBLE
SIGNAL This is particularly useful when taking a measurement with the HOLD function enabled. Once the measurement is complete, the meter alerts you with a short beep.

TWO BUILT-IN LANGUAGES
From the MENU, you can select one of two languages: Polish and German. The meter can also be configured for other languages.

MEMORY The
built-in memory, which stores 960 measurements, allows you to easily review measurements after completing the measurement process. The memory is not erased when the device is switched off or the batteries are removed

POWER SUPPLY
2x R6 (AA) alkaline batteries. The operating time on a single set of batteries can reach up to several hours of continuous use.

BATTERY LEVEL INDICATOR The
meter’s display features a battery level indicator. Thanks to this indicator, you won’t be caught out by a flat battery and can replace it in good time.

EASY TO USE
The meter is operated via a 4-button keypad and an additional trigger button, which, when pressed, illuminates the measurement area.

COLOUR DISPLAY
The meter features a clear, 1.8-inch colour LCD display.

How the MEASUREMENT ASSISTANT® function works GRAPHICAL AND TEXTUAL
DISPLAY When the MEASUREMENT ASSISTANT® function is enabled, the meter displays messages on the screen during measurements to indicate the condition of the bodywork:

"ORIGINAL COAT" – correct paint (green scale)
"DOUBLE COAT" - second coat of paint (yellow scale)
"FILLER" - filled area (red scale)
It should be noted that the MEASUREMENT ASSISTANT® function is intended solely to aid in the interpretation of measurements; it cannot serve as the basis for a definitive answer as to whether the car has undergone bodywork and paint repairs. Nevertheless, many people assessing cars do not really know what a given paint thickness means, which is why this function is designed to help with this.

The gauge enables automatic detection of galvanised steel sheet. Detection occurs up to a paint thickness plus zinc thickness of approximately 550 µm. This
facilitates vehicle assessment, as entire damaged components are often replaced with non-galvanised replacements.

PLEASE NOTE! There are instances where the gauge has failed to detect zinc on steel sheet used in a replacement part, despite the replacement manufacturer’s claim that the sheet is galvanised. On the same component, but an original one, the zinc coating was detected. This is an additional advantage of the gauge, as it makes it easier to identify a car that has been in an accident.
